AUTUMN TERM 2009
SYCAMORE CLASS
Welcome to our homepage! We hope that this page will provide you with all the information you need to ensure your child has the right equipment in school at the right time. It will also give you some information on the topics that we will be covering this term.
Sycamore class is taught by both Miss Green and Mrs Clitheroe who work closely together to ensure consistency for all of our children. Miss Green teaches on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Clitheroe teaches on Thursdays and Fridays.
We are fortunate enough to have three Teaching Assistants assisting in our class: Mrs Clayton, Mrs Bland and Mrs John and they will help both the pupils and teachers.
|
We have several topics this term but we start with a History, Science and Design and Technology topic based on the theme of 'TOYS'. We will be looking at toys that are both old and new and investigating the materials that they are made from.
We will then move on to investigating the way in which different puppets work and the children will have the opportunity to design and make their own puppet.
Following the success of last term's visit to the Folk Museum we will be returning to use their facilities and expertise to investigate a range of toys from the past.

Last year both Year 1 and Year 2 visited the Key Theatre in Peterborough to see 'The Tiger that came to Tea'. It enabled us to bring to life the Literacy work that we were completing in school
|

|
This year we have secured seats for the children to see 'The Stickman' at the Key Theatre on October 19th. Once again we will be completing a unit of Literacy work on this wonderful text by Julia Donaldson. More information on this will follow shortly.

Helpers in School
In previous years we have been extremely grateful to our regular parent heplers who have supported our children in the classroom. In particular we have relied on parent helpers to support the 'Guided Reading' that takes place in school. These parents have often commented that helping in these sessions has really helped them when supporting their own children with reading at home. We will be looking for more parent helpers particularly for Wednesday afternoons. Please look out for our letter requesting parent helpers or pop in to speak to one of us.
PLEASE NOTE
P.E times this term: indoor P.E. on Wednesdays and outdoor Games on Friday.
Reading books will continue to be changed everyday. We ask that children go into Ash classroom every morning if they wish to change their book. They should then leave their new choice of book along with their reading record in the box labelled 'I have changed my book'. Teachers and Teaching Assistants can then record the books that have been chosen. Sometimes children like to choose a book that they have had already, just like they would often re-read a book at home. This is of course acceptable; although if a book was chosen several times a member of staff would encourage children to select a different book. We appreciate the comments that parents make in the reading records and will continue with the system of parents recording the choice of book and date as this frees up more teacher time in the classroom.
Spellings will continue to be tested every week. Mrs Clitheroe will set these weekly and as in previous years there will several words that can be learnt and then a couple of 'surprise words!!' that will follow a similar pattern. This allows us to see if the children are able to apply the spelling pattern to a range of words. Learning Logs are given out on Thursdays and are to be returned 12 days later on a Tuesday. Thank you for your support with this homework. We both enjoy marking them.
We look forward to meeting you officially at our first parents' evening. However if you have any further questions prior to this please do not hesitate to pop in and speak to either of us. Unfortunately first thing in the morning is not always the best time if your issue requires more then a few minutes of time but we will be happy to make an appointment with you after school.
Many thanks
Miss Green & Mrs Clitheroe
